The entryway into the Auschwitz-Berkinau death camp.
A favorite trick of the Nazis when entering an affluent Jewish district was to announce that it’s residents were being relocated to Siberia. They were made to take their most valuable possessions, carefully label their luggage, and then purchase an expensive rail ticket from the SS. None of these tickets delivered anyone to Russia – they were in fact purchasing carriage to Auschwitz. Let me say that again – they were made to buy their own ticket to the death camps.
As a matter of efficiency prisoner trains were brought directly into the center of camp. People were unloaded systematically, and “doctors” made the decision whether they were suitable for slave labor on the spot. Less than 30% were deemed acceptable. The rest were sent immediate to the gas chambers for extermination.
